About Lisa Peternel
Lisa E. Peternel is an experienced second line operational/information technology risk executive. She is a subject matter expert on all types of operational risk who provides effective challenge to business and senior leaders and demonstrates credibility as a trusted advisor on risk management decisions. Lisa currently resides in Hoboken, New Jersey. Since July 2019, Lisa has been the owner of Operational Risk & Cybersecurity Solutions, LLC, a company that serves the Greater New York City area and beyond, offering tailored solutions to reduce operational, technology and cybersecurity risk. Peternel has in-depth expertise in assessing and mitigating risks to protect and safeguard a company, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations. She is a seasoned board speaker and regulatory resolution specialist.
Prior to her work with Operational Risk & Cybersecurity Solutions, LLC, Lisa E. Peternel served as Senior Vice President, Head of Operational Risk for E*TRADE Financial Corporation, the pioneer of online trading for retail investors. Peternel’s then 25+ years of experience in the financial services industry provided her with ample skills that helped her as she spent more than 6 years building and leading the large bank operational risk framework for identifying and evaluating risks across the firm. This included RCSA, information technology/cybersecurity risk, third party oversight, loss tracking and governance.
Before she was recruited to work with E*TRADE, Peternel held leadership roles in the Corporate Operational Risk area and as the Operational Risk Executive of the Consumer, Business Banking and Chase Wealth Management divisions at JPMorgan Chase & Company. Lisa was the Operational Risk Executive at Bank of America, supporting Consumer Business and Premier Banking and Investments. Prior to her roles in Operational Risk, she worked in Product Development and Management at Bank of America and Federated Investors. She also worked on the buy-and-sell side of firms, including Scudder, Stevens & Clark; CS First Boston; and Alliance Capital. Peternel was also a Public Finance Investment Banker at NatCity.
Peternel graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. She held her Series 7, 66 and 52 (licensed in prior roles) and completed the Wharton/Risk Management Association’s advanced Risk Management Program in 2016.
Part of what makes Lisa E. Peternel an expert in her field is her willingness to share her expertise with others. Peternel was the Operational Risk Keynote Speaker for the 2017 SIFMA IAS Annual Conference in Florida. In 2016, she was an Inaugural Regulatory Reporting Symposium Panelist for EY in New York. Peternel’s first notable speaking event was in 2013, serving as an Operational Risk North America Conference Speaker.
Throughout the years, Peternel has mastered a variety of skills, including process improvement, project and program management, financial services, business continuity, team leadership, relationship management, risk assessment, analytics, thought leadership, vendor management and regulatory compliance.
Lisa possesses a unique mix of risk management and technology development skills, coupled with financial services experience. This gives her the knowledge to provide a common sense and practical approach to all risk-related issues because she has a deep understanding of various components across different disciplines.
On a more personal level, Lisa’s hobbies include running, tennis, golf and sailing.
